Southwest Airlines Announces Major Changes to Loyalty Program

U.S.-based Southwest Airlines has announced that it will restructure its Rapid Rewards loyalty program starting January 1, 2027. Under the new system, the existing A-List and A-List Preferred tiers will be renamed Silver and Gold, while a new Platinum tier will be introduced. Silver status will require 25 flights or 35,000 points, Gold 50 flights or 65,000 points, and Platinum 100 flights or 140,000 points.

The Companion Pass benefit, which allows passengers to travel with a designated companion without paying an additional airfare, will also be incorporated into the new system. Platinum members will receive unlimited access to this benefit, while members reaching 75 flights or 95,000 points will receive three companion trips. Spending on Southwest credit cards will also contribute toward earning status. Beginning in spring 2027, Rapid Rewards points will be redeemable for flights operated by Icelandair, Etihad Airways and China Airlines.
